HELP!!! Need a Current Social Issue!!

HELP!!! Need a Current Social Issue!!

I need a current social issure to turn into a 10 week assignment - 7 of which will be spent researching and following at least one individual. Of course there are easy umbrella issues like the environment, or immigration, but I need a specific story, an angle that's new. I have to have a story proposal by next Thursday and I have been non-stop reading every news story, weird news, and soundbyte I can get my eyes on trying to find something I can delve into passionately for 10 weeks. Any suggestions? I think the tough part is that once I decide on an issue I am going to have to find somone who will let me shadow them for a few weeks. Anyone know anyone interesting in Orange County, Ca? Damn, this is gonna suck. It's gotta be something i can write 15 pages on. Can anyone help me????

HA HA HA! Yeah, I think I am going to follow this guy who's moving to California for the Gold Rush....should be interesting. Or maybe I should follow someone on the Oregan Trail??? Hmmmm. I like the story Jack Burroughs posted about the guy in LA who is ahead of the Temple 420 on Hollywood Blvd. Its a church that meld Jewish and Christian beliefs into one religion focusing on the Holy Bible. Apparently he is trying to legalize cannibus as a legal religious substance. He calls himself the Pope of Pot. He sounds like a real interesting character, but he might not respond to my request to follow him. We'll see. Keep pitching ideas cus I need more leads to follow up on. Following a K-9 officer could be cool...or it could be boring...would it be bad to hope for a shoot out or a car chase? Probably. Keep 'em comin! Thanks --Sue

Good point Idlewild. I remember watching documentary about Hollywood street kids. Kids that ran away from home seeking dreams in Hollywood and ending up homeless. Apparently they group up together. Keep up the suggestions, they are good. I am following some sources so thanks guys! -Sue

Well, seems like California always has some propositions headed for the ballot--which ones are being pushed now? Some must deal with social issues... some are pretty wacky, I'd bet. Also there's the whole mess over what to do with the King/Drew medical center, mortage fraud increasing in SoCal, and the LA mayor's attempt to take over the school system, etc. (I get a daily email from the LATimes). Or tie something into the Black Dahlia--there must still be droves of young women (and men) coming to LA to seek their fortune in the movie industry; some will fail and end up in prostitution or drugs. Is California still the land of dreams? Could look at it from the angle of several new California arrivals who are trying/have tried to make it in movies, music, modeling, etc.

development/growth is always an issue in Orange, Co., right? Maybe a person who's having a huge housing development built next to them. Or how population growth is causing conflicts over how everyone will have enough water. Is the job market tight? Are illegal immigrants taking jobs a problem? Are long-time residents getting priced out of neighborhoods by yuuppies or dot-com types who are driving housing costs up? These are just a few social-type issues that I can think of off the top of my head...

We just had a Sheriff and his K-9 get shot and killed over here in Florida. Maybe an angle there for you. Following K-9 unit? I don't if this is a Social Issue
