Most people are infected with the virus that can lay dormant in the body for years, with out knowing they have contracted it. The first signs one might experience is when they have an outbreak, which is described as a blistering cold sore.
Herpes can be transmitted just by rubbing the infected site on any part of your partner's body parts. Penetration is not a requirement for transmitting genital herpes to your sexual partner.
