Hidden Screen Gems

Hidden Screen Gems

Not long ago I wrote about movies that were so bad they had to be seen to be believed. I am a big fan of films and I am enough of a movie snob to have enjoyed movies like “Citizen Kane” and “Aguirre: Wrath of God” but what I love to find are those hidden movies. Those movies that often did not do well in theaters but gained a life of their own on video or on cable. These are hidden gems and I wanted to tell you about some of the ones I love.

The thing about some of these is that I love them for the same reason I hated some of those movies in the other article I wrote. The difference is often in the tone of the movie. Some of these movies are as incomprehensible as the movies I mentioned I hated. The thing is that the people in them seem to realize that and are having such a good time that it just comes off the screen.

Most of these movies you can find on DVD or on cable. I am willing to admit that these are movies that are not for everyone. Some of you may watch these and think they are the dumbest thing you have ever seen. I am willing to admit that these movies aren’t probably for everyone. I am just saying that, for whatever reason, they worked for me and I think you might enjoy them too.

1. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension – Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd and Ellen Barkin are just a few of the stars in this movie. This movie is so over-the-top goofy that you just get caught up in it. The movie was supposed to be the start of a movie franchise but it bombed at the box office and then the movie studio that made it went under. It took me forever to even sort of understand the plot. These days, when I watch it, it’s the little things that just crack me up. Watch how Christopher Lloyd’s character behaves in the background. Listen for the line, soft in the background, that says “We are not in the eight dimension, we are over New Jersey.” Look at the goofy signs in the background. There are parts of this movie that don’t work and the plot is ridiculous but never have so many people looked like they were having so much fun.

2. Fail-Safe – This movie suffered from the fact that it came out the same year as Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” and that it is has a similar theme. But while the Kubrick film has a humorous bent this movie plays it very serious. Henry Fonda is brilliant as the President who has a hard decision to make when an accident sends a nuclear bomber wing into the Soviet Union. What holds this movie together, however, is the performance of a young Larry Hagman. Yes, Major Nelson and Jr. Ewing. His role as the translator is understated but powerful. He is the voice of the Kremlin. There is even brief cameo of a very young and very thin Dom DeLuise. The ending of this movie is still one of the most powerful you are likely to ever see. We may no longer have a Soviet Union or bomber wings to deal with but this movie is still powerful and will still make you think.

3. Shaun of the Dead – Shaun is a slacker who works a menial job and would rather stay home and play video games with his slacker friend. He and his friend would rather spend evenings at the same pub every night rather than doing things with their girlfriends (well, only Shaun has a girlfriend). Now throw zombies into this mix and you have one truly hilarious movie. The scene where hey throw records at zombies is hilarious. The scene were a mob beats a zombie with pool cues to the beat of a song by “Queen” is funny enough to make you rupture something. Billy Nighy shows he had a great sense of humor as a man who just wants some quiet. This movie is note-perfect in its hilarity. The jokes play perfectly and then some truly hideous gore is thrown in for good measure.

4. Searching for Bobby Fisher – This is one of the sweetest movies you are ever likely to see. It’s nice to see Joe Montegna playing a nice father rather than a gangster. Little Josh Waitskin may be the next chess prodigy but how can be become that and still be a little boy. This movie is one of those movies that when I find it on while flipping through channels I have to watch it. The performances are fantastic. Even the kids in this movie are great. This movie is a total treasure.

5. Whale Rider – Yes, sure this movie was adopted by the critics when it came out. It did pretty well as far as ticket sales are concerned. However, you should rediscover this movie. It tells the tale of a little girl who just my be the future of her Maori tribe. It’s a family movie that plays perfectly for adults too. Here’s another movie where the kids are perfect in their performances. If you haven’t seen it you need to and if it’s been a while since you have then you need to watch it again.

6. Unbreakable – for me this is the best M. Night movie. It’s an attempt to give some kind of ultra-realistic look at the idea of comic books and super heroes. Bruce Willis turns in one of his finest performances as a man who may be more than he appears. Even Samuel L. Jackson is good as “Mr. Glass” who may also be more than he appears. This one is the biggest gamble on the list and I know of at least one person who hates this movie with a passion. However, if you are like me and love comic books, I think you’ll love this take on the idea of super heroes in everyday life.

7. Eurotrip – I wanted to hate this movie. It was another mindless teen sex movie. It is another mindless teen sex movie. The thing is it’s a hilarious mindless teen sex movie. I watched this movie expecting it to end up on my list of movies to avoid and found myself laughing out loud throughout the entire movie. The Worst Twins Ever alone are worth seeing this. Plus some quality nude scenes are always a nice touch.

I am sure, like my other list, that there are more. Everyone has their favorites. Heck, I still love “The Last Boy Scout” even though that has to be the most ridiculous movie ever made. Again, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Get that NetFlix queue updated and happy watching.

oh... & another one...

& anthonyb... i'll tip my hat to your mention of el dorado. i'll still take rio bravo, naturally, but that's easily my pick for best unknown john wayne movie.

or maybe not...

alright... i'm game...

as an old-time movie list man who's just learned that the internet is MADE for people like me... i'll join in the fun & scold each of you for not acknowledging MY lone point of joint reference (heheheheeh)... nothing against the rest, of course... i always thought fail-safe was a little bleak, but that's only 'cause i saw dr strangelove first. i might have grown up thinking strangelove was a little silly... but i'll give you this. as a henry fonda AND a walter matthau man... it's always a treat to watch them together. but the clear gem of this particular movie buffs selections is buckaroo banzai. naturally, the role this movie played in my youthful linking between being high (which puts you in the mood to stare at flashing sparkly things) & watching science fiction movies (which are chock-FULLA flashing sparkly things) is a factor. as was my delight in learning that peter weller could play something other than the tin man in a cop-buddy picture... with a chyck-buddy, no less... (i saw them in reverse chronological order, you see) but mostly, it's my love of watching john lithgow, jeff goldblum &/or christopher lloyd in just about any movie in which any of them have ever appeared. even singly. & here... they're ALL there!! with robocop AND flashing sparkly things! what more could a movie possibly have to offer? shame it's spoken for now... it just might have slipped into my 10 sci-fi movies. now i'll have to dig up a more obscure classic 80s sci-fi movie. but seriously... if you haven't seen buckaroo banzai yet... make THAT one you're first! & THEN see the rest of them (again, if you like).

or maybe not...

great list! the movies i've

great list! the movies i've seen on this list have all been excellent, which makes me think i really need to see the movies on here that i haven't seen yet.

Your welcome and thank you

I enjoy when you do these posts and you've given me a few to watch as well

Thanks..

You have added a few to my list, which was kind of what I was hoping for with this post :-) I have seen Zulu and Zulu Dawn, but very good movies, especially Zulu. Stalag-17 is excellent as well. The others I will have to add to my list and see.

I thought of a few of my own

The Bedford Incident ( 1965) - starring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier, these two collaborated on a few good ones but keeping with the cold war topic this one was chilling with Widmark as the right wing Captain of an American nuclear destroyer playing cat and mouse with a Soviet nuclear sub in the arctic circle. Poitier is a journalist on board who tangles with him. The ending is classic. The Unforgiven - not Clint's but Burt Lancaster and Audry Hepburn as his "indian sister". The only problem was that nobody including Audry knew this except their mother. Ahh, thats why the indians keep coming to harass us, they want their own back. The simmering chemistry between Burt and Audry even as they were brother and sister was bordering on insestual but to find the truth, how liberating. Audie Murphy has an excellent support role as another brother of Audrys who is a little more willing than Burt to give "sis" back Zulu - Michael Caine's screen debut and Stanly Baker are the stars of this true story of the battle of Roarke's Drift in S.Africa between the British and the Zulu's. The day before this battle, an entire column of British were massacared by Zulu armies totaling nearly 1,500 dead. Similar to what happened to Custer but Xs 10 . Now, 4,000 Zulu's are marching on the tiny little post of Roarks Drift where there are about 100 or so British soldiers nicely dug in. This one was so well done that it ranks as one of my favorites. At first Caine and Baker clash over command but pull together to give the Zulu's a fight that was one for the book. The first nearly half of the movie moves a bit slow setting up the story nicely though and the rest of the movie is nothing but non stop action. A real gem, and launched the career of Caine, one of the finer actors ever. El Dorado - John Wayne, Robert Mitshum and an early role for James Cann. Look, I know Duke has the Searchers and others which rate higher on the scale and that some of his stuff is done with a certain formula but El Dorado is really a hidden gem and an underated movie. It is actualy somewhat of a remake of an earlier Duke movie, Rio Bravo with Dean Martin and Rick Nelson and that was no slouch either, actualy rated higher than El Dorado by some but I believe they got it done better the second time around. It's the story of a hired Gunslinger ( Duke ) and his friendship with a drunken Sheriff ( Mitchum ) and his ( Duke's ) guilt over accidently killing a boy who's family now needs the help of the drunken sheriff who needs the help of the gunfighter who needs the help of the kid ( Cann ) oh hell, just watch it. The Gunfighter - Gregory Peck, He plays Johnny Ringo who's rep is bigger than life and he can't walk into any town without some punk looking to make their rep by killing him in a fight. He's looking to settle down now and comes home to find his wife and son. There is one scene they shot to show his speed with a gun and the way it was filmed always stood with me. He lets a young punk draw first on him and all you hear is a shot and so quickly, spliced to be simultanious you see Peck just standing over his body, gun still smoking. Classic. I can do this all day, love this category but I'll give just one more. Stalag 17 - William Holden - Concentration Camp classic with Holden as the hated rat who is'nt really helping the Crouts even though they all think he is. He'll find the real rat who is actualy a "plant" by the Germans. Well I think this one is too well known as Classic so maybe I've strayed. Alright, one more. Battleground - Van Johnson, James Whitmore, Ricardo Montalban, what at first seems like a usual gung ho war movie for that time ( made in 1949 ) it is the story of a close knit squad during what turned out to be the battle of the Bulge in WW2. The movie puts you right in the trenches with these guys and develops the many characters in a way that new Hollywood only dreams they could do. The best part is the end when relief comes finaly to the surrounded men of the 101st airborne and this squad marches out past all the fresh and clean relief looking like death warmed over singing their marching song. Jody was there when you left, your right Your baby was there when you left, your right Sound off, one two, sound off three four Kings count one two three four, three four Would also like to point anyone to my post on another classic " Angels with Dirty Faces " starring James Cagney. That one I did an entire post on lol

Shaun was hilarious

Not trying to say my scene was funnier than yours ( I am being accused of playground tactics on another post where I am fighting the good fight ) I laughed all through that movie but EXPLODED when they were learning to walk like zombies so they could walk among them. The price off admission right there.

Another good one...

Manchurian Candidate, the original, another great catch. I love that movie. The things about lists is that they could really go on forever. You could break them down into categories. I tend to love a lot of movies in a wide variety of genres from war movies to horror and everything in between.

How could I forget!!!

See, Fail-Safe has too many performances to keep track of. Mathau as Groeteschele is fantastic! So unlike his normal performance, cold-blooded to the point of scary. Good catch.

Totaly agree on Fail Safe but.....

I'm surprized you failed to mention Walter Matthau. I've seen it at least 20 Xs because it is a performance movie and have always thought that Matthau stole the movie as the hard line right wing professor. Of course Hagman was excellent as well. The one chilling moment in the entire movie for me above all was when the wife of the lead bomber pilot gets on through radio contact and tries to convince him not to drop his bombs. Spine tingleing indeed. The Matador, the matador. I am the matador.
