Many, many artists did this. Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rembrandt just to name a few. Some just painted over previous studies of the same piece others like Van Gogh painted over completely different works. No one is for sure why. Sometimes it may have been cost - it is cheaper to paint over than to buy a new canvas. Other times the artist may have just not liked the original. Or it could've been a combination of both.
