Hiking on Oahu

Hiking is an underrated activity on Oahu. Overshadowed by gorgeous beaches with awesome surf and snorkel spots, the many cultural attractions as well as world-class shopping and dining it is understandable why many people don't have hiking on their mind when they come to visit the island. However, Oahu (along with the other Hawaiian islands) has many beautiful trails offering a variety of landscapes to explore.

Thanks to conservationists and local organizations there is a well developed trail system all across the island. From easy strolls on wide footpaths to four point ridge climbs up the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges, there are trails for any type of hiker.

The amazing thing about the local terrain is the scenic diversity. On a single trail one can traverse through a bamboo forest, guava grove, stand of pine trees, white ginger patches, and gulches replete with ferns and bird-of-paradise. If it sounds like a feast for the senses, it is. Not a far drive from downtown Honolulu or Waikiki one can be transported to the natural beauty of the island, into paradise.

For those who come to Oahu specifically to take in the splendor of the ocean and beaches, there are a couple of trails that start at sea level. Throughout the hike the ocean is visible and of course after the hike it is an easy jump into the water or flop onto the soft sand.

Regardless of where a trail is on the island there is bound to be breathtaking views and an abundance of flora to enjoy. On top of it all there are no snakes to contend with or mountain lions to worry about. Nor is there any poison oak to deal with.

So for tourists who want to take a break from the beach or who just want a day away from crowded attractions, hiking is a perfect alternative. And for locals who want to decompress from the pressures of work (or if you're like me and want to get away once in a while from the congestion of Honolulu) hiking is a great outlet. Many of the trails are easy and safe enough for children and some have picnic tables good for family outings.

Aloha!

Oh, and by the way, the Hawaiian sun is strong and even though the trails offer some respite from the heat and rays, you definitely need sun protection and plenty of water. Mosquito repellent is a good idea too. And don't forget to bring your camera!
