Home Pregnancy Test, Can This Be Trusted?

A study shows that a home pregnancy kit is not always reliable as it seems to be.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the 99 percent accuracy rate claimed by many commercial urine tests may not be accurately true.

The study further revealed that about 10 to 25 percent of all pregnancies cannot be detected during the first day of a missed period. This is contrary to most pregnancy home kits claim of accurately identifying pregnancies during this time.

Harmful effects can stem from these unreliable results from pregnancy home kits. Many still continue to smoke, take medications, or even consume alcohol after getting a false-negative result from home kits which they would otherwise avoid have they known that they are really pregnant.

Furthermore, false-negative results can also cause emotional fallout to some women. Since many women want answers as early as possible and getting a false-negative result after many tests can produce emotional strain to mothers.

On a positive note however, home pregnancy kits are still reliable tools provided one knows how to use these wisely. Studies suggest that test should be done a week after a missed period. In this case 97 percent of women will get accurate results. Test again after a week even after getting a negative result, especially if you think that you are pregnant.
