Homemade Bird cage cleaner, and Bird Toys
posted May 4, 2008 - 4:08pmWhat You Will Need:
1 clean, empty spray bottle
3 cups hot water
3 tbsp Baking Soda
2 tsp liquid Grapefruit Seed Extract
Grapefruit Seed Extract may not be a familiar ingredient to all bird owners, but is completely safe for birds and contains natural enzymes
that act as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and help break down organic material
Just mix these together, and you have a safe cage cleaner for your birds house.
1. Strings, paper clips, bottle caps
Birds love stringy things. Just take some shoe strings and tie them together and put them on the side of the cage. Its that simple. Just make sure to keep them trimmed so your bird doesnt get his little feet caught up in the string. You can also take paper clips hook them together and hook it to the side of the cage. They LOVE it. Same with bottle caps. I use milk bottle caps, clean it up really well, run shoe string or 100%cotton string through them, Oh they love it.
2. Beads and Spools
What I do, Is I purchase wood beads and wood spools at the craft store. There REALLY CHEAP. The safest thing to use to color the beads and spools is food coloring. I just soak them over night in the coloring of choice, let them dry out on a rack, the run them through string. You can make a one string toy, or hook a bunch together. (ALWAYS REMEMBER NOT TO MAKE A TOY BIGGER THEN YOUR BIRD) and always to keep your toys trimmed. 100% cotton items are the safest. You can also soak the string in food coloring as well.
3. Feathers
My birds love feathers. Birds will preen away at them. You can purchase these at walmart for around 2 bucks. There really cheap especially if on sale. I just tie them onto string with a bead on top of them, and push the ends through the beads. Then tie a knot on the top of the bead so none of it moves. Its easy. I try to add these to all my toys for my birds. Birds get lonely, and preening is a way to make them feel more comfortable
4. Acrylic Toys
You can purchase these in the toy section at walmart. There cheap, also at $1 stores. Rattles, baby toys, wood blocks. Just make a hole and you no what to do next. Its so simple. Get creative with it, make it eye catching. Your bird will love it and you can also sell toys on ebay
5. Coconut hanging toy
To make this toy , saw 1/3 of top of coconut off. Scrape out the inside ( I eat the contents). Drill a small hole in side 1/4 in from the edge and hang with a chain to free standing perch or cage. The top peice can be hung with a peice of leather with strips tied in knots for another toy. The bird will like to get inside of it and hear him/her self talk. You can also put treats inside it
