Forget Karl Rove, James Carville, Machiavelli, etc... Homer is the REAL strategic genius when it comes to politics.

That one quote sums up why negative advertising is so common (and effective): it's a lot easier to make yourself feel good (and make voters vote for you) by making the other guy (gal) look bad. Make them think the other candidate is a crook or a child abuser, tax cheat, pornographer, etc.
