Honda’s New GPS Navigation System Warns Drivers of High Crime Areas

In Japan Honda has developed a crime rate detection system in their GPS that will scan through the police database and warn drivers if they are driving through a high crime area.

This on-board navigation system will be installed on the new Honda cars and will warn drivers if they are entering a high risk crime area where cars have been stolen, broken into or damaged.

Honda has no plans to introduce this crime rate detection system in the U.S.

I don’t know what the car crime rate is in Japan but this is something we really need in the US. The only problem of deploying this in the U.S. is that Honda would have to work with all the Law Enforcement Agencies in the U.S. to make this happen. I can see this as the biggest stumbling block.

Doesn't say "violent" crime

The article doesn't say anything about violent crime, wonder if it would tip you off to areas high in any type of crime? I'd propose the area around the headquarters of Altria (formerly Phillip Morris), the cigarette maker that has killed millions with its product, while lying before Congress and hiding the known hazards of cigarettes from regulators for decades. If murdering millions of people isn't a crime, I don't know what is!

I could see the lawsuits now...

Base driving route on crime rates??? Not in America!

The ACLU would have a cow--literally

Crime and where it occurs is a taboo in the United States. A check of the compiled FBI crime statistics shows that most violent crime occurs in urban centers and is perpetrated by certain racial groups more than others (per capita). However, if this data were to serve as the basis for automobile navigation, there would be more cries of discrimination and racism than cars sold in this country. The navigation system works in Japan because that country is largely homogeneous so crime is comparatively low. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
