Hooray for Salma Hayek!
posted February 13, 2009 - 12:06pmAfter seeing the video of Salma Hayek breastfeeding a stranger's malnourished baby it took me a few moments to decide how I felt. As a mother who is still breastfeeding her son, I have to applaud her decision to share her baby's milk with a child who needed it. Would
I have done the same? I don't know. I like to think that I would.
Even after reading her claims that she's 'addicted to breastfeeding' I still have to say that her audacity to feed that hungry baby encouraged me. Her actions made me want to do more as a person and a mother. Usually celebrities inspire the opposite reaction from me and disdain follows their actions, but this is a pleasant exception.
It took courage to defy local practice and feed that baby and I hope that mothers in that area will follow her example. Even though the mothers' husbands discourage breastfeeding by implying that one may not have sexual relations with a woman who is breastfeeding, your child's health is far more important that having sex any day. Salma Hayek acted as a good mother would in such a situation. If more mothers acted in such generous ways then the world might be a better place.
