Horror from a Legend: The She Beast
posted November 2, 2009 - 6:03amMichael Reeves (1943-1969) only directed four movies - and he didn't even get a credit on his first one, CRYPT OF HORROR from 1964, co-directed with Luciano Ricci and Lorenzo Sabatini, and starring the great Christopher Lee and featuring Donald Sutherland in his first movie role (he had done some TV before this).
Reeves - credited as Mike Reeves - then made THE SHE BEAST in 1966, a movie with several alternative titles: REVENGE OF THE BLOOD BEAST, IL LAGO DI SATANA, SATAN'S SISTER, SISTER OF SATAN, plus it's original Italian title; LA SORELLA DI SATANA. But THE SHE BEAST sounds much cooler, right!
THE SHE BEAST is rather traditional, Italian gothic horror, starring the queen of 1960s Italian horror; Barbara Steele, and Ian Ogilvy - an actor who in the '70s played Simon Templar in a revival of THE SAINT for TV.
Reeves followed THE SHE BEAST in 1967 with THE SORCERERS, once again starring Ogilvy, this time paired with horror legend Boris Karloff, and then, in 1968, Ian Ogilvy appeared along yet another legend of horror; Vincent Price, in one of England's most famous horror classics: WITCHFINDER GENERAL, released in the U.S. as THE CONQUEROR WORM.
The young master director Michael Reeves was in pre-production of THE OBLONG BOX in 1969, when he suddenly died, and fans and historians are still discussing if it was suicide or not.
THE SHE BEAST is in public domain, meaning it can be downloaded and watched legally and free. Click the link below for a site where you can stream it.
