The House Health Care Proposal (Latest Chapter): Yahoo!
posted October 31, 2009 - 10:22pmThe title of a recently released Yahoo! article is "Path clears for House to OK compromise health care bill". The key word here is obviously "compromise".
OK, we've asked this question many times, but we have to ask it every time because it's important. What are people saying about these recent developments? What is the tone? The first sentence is "They may not like it, but many House liberals look ready to accept a compromise health care bill, putting Democratic leaders WELL (?) on the way to delivering on President Barack Obama's call for overhaul". They may be "on the way", but are they "well on the way?"
According to Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, "The current language IS FAR WEAKER THAN WHAT I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED and I think that is also true of the Progressive caucus. BUT BECAUSE I DID NOT COME UP HERE TO PARTICIPATE IN GRIDLOCK AND ACRIMONY (i.e. bitterness and needless debate/stalling), I am willing to compromise". How many of his Congressional colleagues are "willing" to do likewise?
According to California Rep. Mike Honda, after he and several other lawmakers met with Mr. Obama at the White House, "He (i.e. Obama) looked at us and he said "You guys OUGHT TO be walking around LIKE you won because you brought back the public option". UNFORTUNATELY (yes, unfortunately) the public option is stuck in partisan wrangling on Capitol Hill at the moment.
Hopefully, a bill with a public option can be passed and signed fairly soon (we can forget about the prospects of anything happening very quickly now).
