The Houston Rockets (2008-09): Past the first round, but still a long way to go
posted September 9, 2009 - 5:58pmThe Rockets made it past the first round of the playoffs for the first time in a long time. So what? They still have major personnel issues. First, let's look at their personnel.
Leading Scorers (20 or more points per game): Center Yao Ming (20), small forward Ron Artest (17), shooting guard Tracy McGrady (16), power forward Luis Scola (13) and point guard Aaron Brooks (13)
Leading Rebounders (4 or more rebounds per game): Yao (10), Scola (9), Artest (5.2), power forward Carl Landry (5), small forward Shane Battier (4.8), McGrady (4.4), power forward Chuck Hayes (4) and center Dikembe Mutumbo (3.7)
Assists' Leaders (4 or more assists per game): McGrady (5) and shooting guard Kyle Lowry (3.6)
Steals' Leaders (1 or more steals per game): Artest (1.5), McGrady (1.2), Lowry (0.9), Scola (0.8), Battier (0.8), Brooks (0.6), Wafer (0.6) and Hayes (0.5)
Leading Shot Blockers (1 or more blocks per game): Yao (1.9), Mutombo (1.2) and Battier (0.7),
Last Game Won: The Rockets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 4-2, winning the final game 92-76 because two of their 'Big 3' played well: Yao (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Artest (27 points) to offset the loss of McGrady who sat out to deal with an achy back.
Season-ender: The Rockets couldn't beat the Lakers losing that series 3-4 because McGrady stayed out because of his back problems and by that point, Yao was also gone with a stress fracture in his foot (an injury that may force him to sit for the entire 2009-10 season although it may not be career-threatening as initially feared) in addition to Dikembe Mutombo who suffered a strained knee during the Portland series which forced him to retire after an 18-year NBA career, leaving only Artest to carry the load and he was only 3-10 with all the pressure on his shoulders in the deciding Game 7 that marked the end to the Rockets' season.
Personnel Issues: Artest will be a Laker in 2009-10 (how ironic is that?) and with Yao sitting out the season, Mutombo retired and McGrady anything but a sure thing, the 2009-10 season does not look good for the Rockets, at least not right now.
