How to Approach A Drunk Individual ( When You Have To)

There are those times when we have to meet up with an individual who is intoxicated, and we have to encounter them. Here are some easy steps that will make this easier for you to handle individuals in this condition.

First thing to remember is that people in this condition are under the influence of a substance and that there attitude can change at any moment. Always use humor, not at them but at life in general. Humor lightens attitudes and lessens stressful encounters. Do not tell them that they are drunk, they probably know that and could take offence to that statement, thus changing attitudes. Be careful what you say and like I said always use humor. Never put your hands in your pockets or cross your arms, this can be taken as a defense position by an individual, and they could become violent. Never point your finger at them or move your arms in a fast motion coming across their face.

Never let them come in physical contact with you. Always try to stay an arms length away from you. Do not let them grab you, if they do, move your body...ie arm, leg, torso, in a clock ward direction to loosen their grip. If they have a grip that you cannot get away from, grab their little finger and yank it back. Remember here they are attacking you and you have all means possible to release their grip from you.

Keep walking, never stand and talk with a drunk, even if it is walking 30 feet and turning around and walking back. This is particularly good with angry drunks. I have had to escort many drunks out of an area and this is how I did it, just walked them out of an area, while they were talking to me. If a person is sleeping or laying down and you have to approach them, make sure you have another person with you.
