How to build a cool Lego spaceship
posted October 27, 2009 - 10:39pmMy two boys and I entered a Lego spaceship building contest. Specifically a Star Wars ship building contest The premise was to build a ship for Anakin Skywalker so he could rescue R2-D2. I wanted to combine all their regular Legos into a huge pile and constuct something using every last piece. The problem was that my kids are young and we just started collecting the regular Legos. We had however plenty of Lego Duplo. Lots of them. My wife thought we should use those. Most entries would be regular Legos. Ours would stand out. My boys didn't like that idea. Duplos aren't sleek and fast looking. A really cool ship would look really fast they argued.
Well the deadline approached and we had nothing. We built several smaller Star Wars ships but nothing impressive or photo worthy. I did constuct a couple of Duplo ships that my kids liked. so with two days to go we built our ship. Out of Duplos.
It started out resembling an Imperial Star Destroyer. That was my intent, anyway. But as my boys fiddled with it, adding bits and pieces from their Airport set and Fire Station set it took on a whole new look. Jet engines provided propulsion and the topside looked like a forest of radar masts and gas hoses and open flames! It took both of them to carry it. We set it up on our coffee table and took some pictures. I drove to the post office early the next morning to send it off.
We haven't heard anything since. But it was a fun time nonetheless.
