How To Build A Raised Flower Bed Retaining Wall

When you think of constructing and building up a retaining wall, it may seem quite a gigantic task, but when you break down the entire process, you could actually envision yourself seeing the retaining wall completed. The materials for your retaining wall are commonly made from stone, mostly natural and also precast and others like hardwood and bricks. You would need big blocks for sharp slope yards and small stone blocks for your porch garden.

Steps to building up a retaining wall for your raised flower bed is outlined below:

#1 - Make an outline of your garden retaining wall, whether it be round curves, rectangular or a combination of both.

#2 - Put markings on the outline with either paint or stakes or ropes.

#3 - Take measurements of the outline and note down the dimensions.

#4 - Visit your best deal home improvement store for construction materials and place your order of your stone blocks based on your measurements taken of the retaining wall.

#5 - Begin digging a trench which is about 12 inches in depth and ensure it is leveled. Pave the area with leveling sand and using a hand packer compress it to a levelled solid base.

#6 - Pave the base row blocks each block at a time and check its flatness with a carpenter's level. Check its level with a ground leveling tool. For better leveling, use a chisel and mallet to knock off the flange.

#7 - Pave the top rows with staggered joints with the row below. Use a masonry wet saw to cut half blocks to complete this step. Lay the top rows to the height you need for your flower bed.

#8 - Complete your retaining wall with installing perforated pipings to facilitate proper water drainage system of your flower bed.

Thanks for the excellent idea. I'm going to build a raised bed along the exposed concrete foundation of my home. My idea is that the soil will help insulate the slab somewhat.
