How Chicken and Mug saved the sight of Spanish V
posted January 3, 2009 - 12:15amBefore Chicken brokered her first omelet and Mug cracked the continent in half, before Spanish V wound herself around the flagpole there was a bowl-shaped heaven above them. Heaven’s center was a gemstar, a prism of many facets, many colors.
Chicken and Mug and Spanish V talked constantly about a journey to the gemstar. Chicken thought the emerald side of the star was the most beautiful and Mug loved the ruby side. They couldn't decide exactly where they wanted to go. Spanish V always focused on the golden center. She spent hours gazing at it and eventually the molten gold burned her eyes and blinded her. Spanish V shed hot tears at the loss of her eyesight and she sat down, plop, right where she was and refused to move.
She played finger dances all day and at night rested her blinded eyes on her knees. Soon her toes became roots and dug themselves into the ground and Spanish V became so still that her hair and her fingers turned green. Her fingers stopped dancing. She neither grew nor died. The only movement about her came when the wind disturbed her green hair.
One day Chicken clucked to Mug about the beauty of Spanish V’s shiny green strands of leafy hair. “I’m sure,” Chicken said, “that the earth beneath Spanish V must be fertile to produce such luscious growth.” Something stirred within Spanish V and from the ends of her fingers suddenly burst ten ruby red fruits. The surprised Spanish V dropped the fruits as soon as she produced them and immediately ten more sprang from the tips of her fingers.
Mug was delighted and began to gather the fruits. She and Chicken munched and pecked until they were so full they nearly burst. “We need some exercise.” Mug announced, “Let’s finally take that trip to the gemstar.” Chicken excitedly flapped her wings shouting “How will we get there? How, how, how?” Mug said, “We’ll fly, of course.” Mug was always ready with a plan. “But we’ll take Spanish V along. Her little ruby fruits tickle my tongue and make me laugh.”
Chicken agreed and began to cluck softly into Spanish V’s mane of green hair. “Come along with us, come along.” The sound was so soothing to Spanish V that she almost reached out to Chicken. Chicken motioned to Mug. Mug took Spanish V’s hands and began to tug while Chicken kept up her soft clucking. Spanish V stood up and slowly pulled her rooty toes from the earth. Mug and Spanish V climbed upon Chicken’s back and nestled into her iridescent feathers. Chicken began to flap her wings and the three of them lifted from the earth and began to soar. Chicken found an updraft and as she circled higher and higher into the night sky, Mug and Spanish V fell asleep in the feather bed of Chicken's back.
Early the next morning Chicken’s feet touched the glowing surface of the gemstar. She ruffled her feathers to awaken Mug and Spanish V. “We’re here!” They held hands and danced round and round so fast that the emerald and ruby and gold colors about them swirled into a sparkling rainbow. Spanish V brushed her hair from her eyes and the colorful glow warmed her face. She opened her eyes and began to cry. Chicken and Mug looked at each other in astonishment. Where the burned eye sockets had been there now resided two sparkling rainbow gems and Spanish V could see once more.
Chicken and Mug and Spanish V are there on the gemstar today and if, on the clearest night of the year, you stand on fertile soil and squint your eyes just so, you can see the rainbow created by three dancing friends.
