How to Convince Yourself to Get Devices with Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.)
posted October 26, 2009 - 2:18pmGone are the days where a person had to use a paper travel map in order to find out how to get from one place to another. While it's always good to 'slide some wax on the ol` Victrola' and make sure you still can find your way around using 'the ancient etchings,' there is now a technology known as the GPS 'system' (I know 'global positioning system system' is a tautology; but then so is "stupid idiot"; no matter how inefficient it is to say the last word when it was directly stated in the previous word, 'people are people' LoL).
GPS devices--which have been used by the military for many years--have recently become popular with the public. These electronic devices that come in different forms: handheld models, display models that are mounted (some upon a permanent fixture of some newer cars).
GPS devices--connected to satellites--guide travelers step by step, turn by turn until the they arrive at their destinations (the addresses which the travelers punch-in along with their starting addresses before traveling).
Some GPS systems will actually talk to travelers and tell them exactly where to turn and when, others are simply interactive maps that will show travelers when and where to turn, but will not give verbal directions. Along with showing or telling users where to turn, GPS systems also say where the travelers are & which direction travelers are currently heading.
Global positioning systems (GPS) are very handy to drivers---drivers should not be hassled with a large maps while they are trying to keep their hands on the steering wheel and -their eyes on the road. This is particularly true for those drivers that are driving alone (with no-one else to navigate for them).
GPS devices are also very handy if a person becomes lost. Since the system will tell the person where `e is, `e can call for help and be able to tell another person-`r location and -how to get there.
Not only are GPS devices useful for drivers, but they are also very useful to anyone that is unfamiliar with `r current location. Take--for instance--hikers. With hand held GPS devices, they can make the most of their hikes, and again--if they get turned around--they can find out how to get back on track by finding the direction they should go in relation to the direction they are currently headed.
Of course, this new technology is very handy and can save a person a lot of hassle; but it is important to study one's particular GPS device to learn how to use the specific tools, as not all GPS devices work exactly the same way. It is also important to know that with any technology, the GPS may not always work and it is still a good idea to have a traditional back up travel map, just in case.
Whether using an electronic device such as a GPS, or using a traditional map, it is a good idea to become familiar with your navigation-method and familiar with your destination before you actually leave for any trip. Maps--whether traditional or electronic--are only as good as the person that use and read them.
