There are a lot of sites that will try to sell you software to do keyword research for you to find low competition niche phrases. Most of the software will cost upwards of a hundred dollars. I'll show you here and easy way to do it for free. Here are the steps.

1. Go to goodkeywords.com and download their free software.

2. Once you have the software up and running type in a general subject word that you want to find a niche on and do a query.

3. Make a list of all the words and phrases it comes up with that have a significant amount of traffic say over 1000 searches.

4. Go to google and type in the keywords for a search and note the number of search results.

5. Tyep in the words again for a search except this time use "quotation marks" in your phrase. Once again make a note of the number of results.

6. Look at both numbers of results. The first one is total results for the keyword and the second number is the optimized results. If the first number is less than 1 million and the second one less than 5000 you have found a keyword phrase with low competition. This means you will be able to rank very easily for that word.
