How to Export HTML Tables to Excel

This article describes how to export HTML tables to Excel using the "Export to Microsoft Excel" right click menu option in Microsoft Internet Explorer. First, let's do a quick test to determine if the option is available in the browser that you will be using. Open Internet Explorer and browse to a Web page containing tabular data. Right click on the table and see if the option "Export to Microsoft Excel" exists on the context menu.

If the "Export to Microsoft Excel" option is NOT available, visit the article: How to Add Export to Microsoft Excel to the Right Click Menu in Internet Explorer (See Resources below). If the "Export to Microsoft Excel" option is available, proceed to Step 1 below.

Instructions

STEP 1 - Most individuals will want to use a Web page of their choice while following the instructional steps herein. To open a Web page of your choice, open Internet Explorer and browse to a Web page containing tabular data.

STEP 2

Right click on the table and choose "Export to Microsoft Excel."

STEP 3 - Resize the "New Web Query" applet as needed.

STEP 4

Select one or more tables by clicking the arrows adjacent to each table.

STEP 5

Left click the "Import" button.

STEP 6 - Left click "OK" on the "Import Data" applet.

STEP 7 - View the results in Microsoft Excel.

Tips and Warnings

Excel does not support getting data from security enhanced Web sites that do not use Microsoft Windows security. A common example of this would be a
bank’s Web site that allows you to view your personal account information.

APPLIES TO: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 (IE7) and Microsoft Office Excel versions 2003 and 2007 (Although not tested or researched by this
Xombyte's writer, the methods herein might apply to Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher and Microsoft Excel 2000 or higher).
