You will have to place them in a place where a visitor will see them. If you have your adsense all the way at the bottom of a page you will not get a lot of clicks. Try placing your ads at the top of your site or blog. People will have a chance to at least see them and catch there eye.
Make sure your customize your color palette so it will match your page. If the background of your web site is white why would the background of your Adsense ad be green? Make it look a part of your page and not an after thought. This can make it seem like it is more a piece of your web site and more professional.
Try only having a few size on your page. Don't try and use all of the format sizes as this can make your site look crazy and unorganized. Try using one long banner and a box banner for starters. Really see how it looks on your site. You will have to play with this a bit to really get a nice feel for the it.
