how to keep your friends
posted October 18, 2009 - 7:52pmI found this great article going over tips to help make and keep friends. It's such a neglected area but it's really important. Friends make you happier, provide resources, and add different perspectives.
1. Be yourself. It's the most over given piece of advice ever. But it's true. Otherwise, what's the point?
2. Keep promises. I'd recommend following what they recommend in business. Under-promise, over-deliver.
3. Show up. If you can be there, do it. Especially if it's important. Better yet help set up and clean up if it's that type of event.
4. Listening. Several of the points were about this. But it makes sense. One of the biggest benefits to a friend is the objective but on your side person to help you sort out stuff right? Repay the favor.
5. Space. You can be there, without being there every second of the day. Boundaries are important, they can be fluid obviously some friends (particularly if you're roommates, etc.) you'll see more often than others. That's ok, just figure out what you're both comfortable with.
6. Compromise. If he/she hates horror flicks, take somebody else to go see Slasher 5000. However, you don't have to be the one who goes to LoveFest3 if you really hate chick flicks. Find things to do that you both enjoy. Maybe just grab lunch in the park,or a mutually enjoyed restaurant.
7. Little things do matter. I thought the cleaning the bathtub idea was a little creepy but maybe bring over dinner when they're sick. Remember that they're allergic to onions or balsamic vinegar.
And seriously, if you need the tip about not sleeping with your friend's boyfriend, I'm concerned... very concerned.
