How to make beads from paper mache
posted April 16, 2009 - 3:17pmIn this part, we will deal with making the paper mache.
You will need. Uncoated paper (newspaper, printer paper, anything as long as its uncoated) a large pan, a stove or hob, a blender, some PVA (Elmer’s glue) paint or nail polish, clear sealant.
Step 1. Tear the pieces of paper into small pieces, about 2 inches square. You can also use paper that has been shredded. The smaller the pieces, the easier it will be and the smoother the end result will be.
Step 2. Soak the paper in boiling water. The easiest thing to do is to leave the paper in the water overnight.
Step 3. In the morning, squeeze some of the excess water from the paper, put it into the blender and blend for about 1-2 minutes.
Step 4. Add some glue to the pulp; the mixture should have the consistency of thick wallpaper paste or modelling clay. Stir thoroughly.
Step 5. Create the shapes you want, using your hands or molds.
Step 6. You can leave them to dry naturally or you can put them in the microwave. Be careful not to leave them in there for too long or it may catch fire. Wait until they have cooled before trying to drill them.
Step 7 Drill a hole through the shapes, big enough to fit wires or ribbons through. You can do this whilst they are still wet but occasionally they fall apart.
Step 8. File away any rough edges using a file or sandpaper.
Step 9. Paint with any kind of paint, acrylic, poster, nail polish. Finish with a clear sealant.
Step 10. Attach whatever findings (wires) you are going to use. You can make earrings, bracelets necklaces or whatever you feel like.
