How to Make The Most of a Small Room

HotelRoom.jpgThese days modern homes and apartments are getting smaller because people can't afford what they once were able to. This is making small rooms much more common. While bigger is better, small rooms can be made to look quite attractive and spacious. Making a few adjustments to your decorating techniques can turn that small room into an attractive living space. It can become a very special and useful part of your home. Below are a few steps you can take when decorating your small room to give it a much larger and more attractive appearance.

1)  Start by emptying the room. Then paint the room a light color. The lighter color will give the room a more spacious appearance.

2)  Hang a large mirror on the wall. This adds to the illusion of more space. Add a few pictures or other decorations to the walls and hang them at eye level. This helps give the appearance that the ceiling is higher then it is thus creating a more open feeling.

3)  Remove any large pieces of furniture and replace with smaller ones. E.g., a love seat for a sofa or a wing chair for a recliner. Use tables with a glass top. These appear smaller because of the transparency of the glass.

4)  Get rid of the clutter. Put things on a shelf or in a drawer. Replace any wide or large lamps with thinner, smaller ones.

5)  If the room has a window, replace any heavy curtains with a shade or blinds to allow light in. If there is no window add sufficient lighting to brighten the room. A well-lit room appears larger than a darker one.

If there is carpet on the floor, consider replacing it with tiles and an area rug. Using a smaller or horizontal patterned flooring (wood) in the room and make it appear larger than it is.

  • Tips:  Minimize the amount of wall decorations. In a small room, fewer is better.
  • Lighter fabric colors on larger pieces of furniture will do more to enhance the illusion than darker ones.
