How to make a succesful fire pit

Campfires are one of my most favorite activities to do with my buddies. Whether it be camping or on a 10 acre piece of land, nothing is more relaxing than over night campfire. Here is a guide to having a successful and relaxing campfire with your friends.

Think of different aspects of your fire pit. How wide, tall and deep do you want your fire pit to be. Will you make your fire pit out one type of material or mix it up. The general rule of thumb is, it is your campfire make it the way you want. Yet there are some general directions you should take to maximize the experience.
First of all you need to clear somewhat of a large flat area around where you want to put the fire pit. Make sure there are no nearby shrubbery or short trees than can catch on fire. Also make sure your fire pit is no where near any structures. To make a simple fire pit you will need bricks, stones and/or cinder blocks. The standard fire pit is just a bunch of bricks surrounding the fire pit. But if you want to channel the heat you must create a wall on one side of the fire pit. Take some cinder blocks and line them around 1 side. Then take some more and stack them in a T formation about 3 layers high. For stability, use construction adhesive between each layer. Or you may just leave them stacked for future rearrangement. And there you go, heat emitting fire pit. The heat from the fire is combined into one place and channeled out so you can enjoy heat a longer distance. This comes in handy because in windy situation you can sit back further and still enjoy the fire with less smoke in your face.
Some other small tips to building a fire.
Make your logs into a triangle formation, use dry leaves and grass for faster burning especially if the ground is wet. When a fire pit gets hot enough damp logs will be no problem. You just gotta get some hot embers underneath the stack. I'm talking a pile of hot embers. And for the experience, bring some drinks, beer, energy drinks and your good sense of humor. Campfires tend to bring out things in people that you normally didn't know about. That can be good and bad, but it's also a good way to know who your true friends are.If your an outdoors person, a good friend will want to have this experience with you time and time again.

Fire Pit

I've been thinking about putting a fire pit in my backyard for a few years. Your instructions make it sound very easy. It is very windy here so your tip of having it one-sided is perfect.
