How to Make a Tropical Home Office out of a Small Bedroom
posted September 1, 2009 - 2:53pm
The first step is to decide on a theme. I felt, if I can't get to the tropics, I will bring it into my office, my working area. This room was a boy’s bedroom, painted a dark blue. I first decided on a pastel color I wanted and decided on a pale green. That was fun, not as bad as I thought for covering such a dark color. I then went on a hunt for stenciling and the type I chose, the palm trees, is the type that can be "rubbed" right onto the wall (and other accessories, as you will see). You can find all types of stencils in craft stores and I happened to find mine in Menards. It was a fun project. I chose to stencil only the wall with the window and the side wall, not all around the room, as a chair rail. I kept the extra stencils to use as accents on other items to tie in the theme of the room. To transfer the stencil find an item with a flat end on it to "smooth" the stencil flat onto whatever surface you are using it for. As you will see, I used it to put a "Palm Tree" onto the garbage can, file containers, front of the drawers on the dresser (which was my daughter's dresser) that I used for files as well. The ideas are endless.
I left my shelves extend a little beyond my desk top for extra support and room and you can as well, however you like to do it. It is very functional. I have two functional printers in my office, one on my desk on top of a printer stand which holds all my printer supplies and one on the side on the shelf as a backup. I found “Palm Tree” accessories as Walgreens such as a glass that I use for scissors, pens, etc., a 3 compartment dish that I use for paper clips, tape and so forth. Keep an open mind. Keep an open mind and go with your imagination. This room was very inexpensive (of course, not counting the computer equipment). My finishing touches involved a hunt on eBay for some tropical posters and photos. I added a great touch to my new room, along with the cork board for notes, a calendar, and some greenery, including a large live “Palm Tree”. Good luck with your new venture.
Research and investigate before working on your room idea.
Use your imagination and shop around for the best prices and what you need to put your room “together”.
When applying the stencils be sure to use a large flat surface to spread evenly across with firm strokes or the stencil will not transfer completely.
