How My Past Came Back to Bite Me (Through My Kid's Behavior)

How My Past Came Back to Bite Me (Through My Kid's Behavior)

It finally happened. I had a feeling that I would get "the call" by the end of my daughter's Freshman or beginning of her Sophomore year in High School. Honestly, she held off longer than I did and for that I am grateful.

You see, my daughter is a hall-roamer. She loves to get excused from her class to a) use the bathroom, b) get her books from her locker, or, c) go see another teacher about homework during "free time" in class. Normally, these requests to get out of the classroom shouldn't become a problem as they can be completed quite quickly. Unfortunately, she has been dealt the "hall-roaming" gene that inflicted me at the exact same age she is now.

And between you and me, she still doesn't know that I was actually voted "most likely to be seen in the halls" in my Senior year and I will do my best to keep it that way!

So at 7:15 AM this morning, my husband and I found ourselves sitting in her Counselor's office trying to figure out why my daughter is a wanderer. (Imagine this exact same scene playing out twenty-six years ago with me, my parents and my Counselor at the time.) After about 45 minutes of discussion, we wrapped it up with my daughter vowing to do her best to stay in class. Oh, the innocence of it all. I know from experience that it's hard to fight the craving to roam the halls.

The Counselor then handed my daughter a pass to get to class and we went to go check out and turn in our visitor's badges. Did my girl go straight to class and get to work? Probably, but I'm sure she took her time getting there...

No such luck

We had no such thing in my schools. You did not leave class for any reason other than the school's i.e.principal, dean, fire alarm, etc. Although my last year I was TA and roamed the halls freely when the teachers didn't have anything for me to do.
