I myself was allowed to stay up that night. I remember being underwhelmed yet grateful for two or three hours less sleep. I don’t really think the whole thing was a put-up job to show those pesky Ruskies that Capitalism ruled. To the point of this article, not Apollo 11's (at last!)

For some reason the verb “to moon” has come to mean “dropping one’s pants and showing one’s bare arse to a person or persons” and has nothing whatsoever to do with the act summarised in the infinitive “to land on the moon”. For another reason, perhaps more related to the death of Michael Jackson, the increasing popularity of Big Brother and alcohol binge culture, the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the First Man on the Moon is being marked by the “mooning to the moon” ceremony, which often takes place on crowded British High Streets, holiday beach-front promenades and outside night-clubs. Suffice it to state, this is how NOT to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the First Man on the Moon!
