How Old Do You Have To Be Before It's Not Called Bullying?

How Old Do You Have To Be Before It's Not Called Bullying?

I’m not sure if you’re all familiar with Monty Python? At least half of you surely? Right, so, has anyone heard of Fawlty Towers? Starring John Cleese and Prunella Scales, Fawlty Towers was a classic British comedy which only lasted two series, unfortunately. Anyways, it starred Andrew Sachs as a bumbling Spanish waiter who became a well-loved character despite his mishaps.

Now, almost thirty years later, Mr Sachs (pronounced sacs) is mostly retired with a nice family. Imagine his horror when after being unable to attend a guest spot on a radio show, was left listening to lewd comments on his voicemail about his 23 year old grand-daughter.

Turns out, after being told of Mr Sachs no-show, the presenters Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross called Andrew Sachs voicemail and left numerous comments about sleeping with his grand-daughter, how she was a member of a satanticsluts website and how they hoped they didn’t give him a heart-attack. Sachs is 78. This doesn’t sound like much but these messages were allowed to be played on the radio show. These segments of the show were pre-recorded and could have been pulled.

My problem isn’t really with this story. It’s more to do with a recent problem Britain is having with cyber-bullying; - it’s comes to the government’s attention that more and more children are being bullied by means of email, text message, or mobile calls (um...cell phone calls, to ye yanks).

My point is, I fail to see the difference between that and what Brand and Ross did to that old man. They called him, leaving many messages with the intent to harass. Is this not the same as bullying?

How old do you have to be before it’s not bullying? If these guys aren’t disciplined for this, then what kind of message does that send out to the kids that already hassle others?

For the timeline of the radio incident, you can catch one here; - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7694989.stm

What was the question

See, I'm of the opinion that

See, I'm of the opinion that Brand is the rebellious lil boy trying to get a reaction by the things he does and says - don't get me wrong, I'm just as cynical, dark-humoured and anti-social as the next Brit but if you're saying things just to get a reaction, rather than because you think it's funny...... Ross, however, I like - he does brown nose a little bit but as an older gentlemen, he usually does well in representing his generation.

Bullying Has No Age Limit but...

Russell Brand is one of the funniest turns on television. Jonathan Ross (host of a Friday night chat show and Film 2008 - a film review) is a bit strange though. Ross reminds me of a young lad in need of reassurance and so wanting to be in with the naughty, trendy crowd. This manifests itself as brown-nosing the celebrites he interviews - I find this very embarrassing to watch. I'm not in full possession of the facts but I read it as Ross manipulating Brand - encouraging him to be naughty as a bonding tactic - he'll be able to say "remember when WE..." I don't know if I'd call the incident bullying but it seems to be disrespectful and if Sachs asked for it not to be broadcast then it shouldn't have been.

Bullying has no age limit up or down

Some people get off on harassing innocent people and calling it entertainment. Here in the States, they wrap themselves in the Constitution and call it freedom of speech; I don't know what they do in Britain, I must confess, other than say they have a right to be jerks and rectal apertures. What they should be required to do is formally apologize to Sachs and his granddaughter on their show. At the very minimum, they should be cited for harassment because they didn't just leave one message as a "prank" but clearly established a pattern and intent to harass the man.
