How to Physically Secure Your Home's Windows

I recently moved to a new place, and while it is a safe neighborhood, I am always prone to ensuring the safety of my place. I prefer to open windows, and get a nice breeze, but with my new setup, the option to open windows is limited while I am away. I want to ensure security, but woudl also like to keep my windows open without risk of window penetration / intrusion.  For this purpose there are websites and articles devoted to securing your home.
