How To Start a Weight Training Program
posted November 4, 2009 - 10:30pmEvery comprehensive exercise program should include weight training. A weight training program is critical for both helping to maximize lean body mass and strengthening core musculature to prevent deconditioning injuries. Starting a weight training program requires a set of goals and a reasonable plan that can be adhered to. Here are some basic steps to keep in mind when starting a weight training program.
Stay committed to your weight training program. Whether you choose to lift at home or at a club is unimportant. Develop a training schedule and stick with it.
Push yourself to improve. The body is an efficient machine which will adapt to your weight training program and limit gains. Unless you consistently strive to work harder your muscles will fail to improve their strength, endurance and appearance.
Set realistic goals. Not everyone has the genetic constitution to obtain a ripped physique; nevertheless, with determination and knowledge everyone can obtain significant and measurable improvement to be proud of.
Utilize your time wisely to maximize your gains. Muscular definition and strength in weight training comes from using proper form rather than total repetitions. Learning proper weight training techniques will reduce the amount of time you have to spend lifting.
Always stretch before and after weight training. Though controversial warming up and cooling down with weight lifting seems to reduce the frequency of injuries and allows the muscles adequate time to recover.
Make smart dietary choices. Why waste time and energy on a weight training program if you're going to eat junk and fast food. Your dietary choices are crucial for helping you to achieve your physical goals. Why cheat on yourself?
Give your muscles sufficient time to rest. Avoid working a specific body part on consecutive days. Not over training will help you to meet your goals and limit the potential for injury.
* If you have chronic medical problems or are not currently exercising it's advisable to see your doctor first to insure there are no contraindications to start a weight training program.
* Maintain balance. Limiting yourself only to a weight training program is as myopic as just performing aerobic exercises. A combination is necessary for proper health and fitness.
