Any security alarm system must have a back-up battery to keep it working in case of a power outage (or deliberate power shut-off).  Typically, sealed lead-acid cells are used, like a maintainence-free car battery.  They have a lifespan of about 3 to 5 years, after which, they need replacement.  You can do this yourself, following the step-by-step instructions in the link below:
