How To Test The Depth Of Hypnosis
posted January 5, 2009 - 8:13amModern day hypnosis is based on the assumption that a direct communication between the subject’s subconscious mind and the hypnotist can be established once the subject slips into a trance. How do hypnotists determine the depth of trance their subjects are experiencing? Many certified practitioners who have practicing hypnosis for some time have already developed a sense of perception which allows them to determine the depth of trance their subjects are experiencing. However, novice practitioners have to rely upon some guesswork and knowledge absorbed from books, tutors, and videos. Some of the classic signs of hypnosis include the subject’s stillness, a change in the subject’s breathing pattern, drooping posture, teary eye, eye fluttering, eye redness and many more. These signs allow the operator to determine the possible depth of trance the subject is experiencing.
There are also tests which can be done in order to determine the depth of hypnosis being reached by the subject. These tests are also helpful especially for those people who are learning self hypnosis. If you are learning self hypnosis, you can usually begin doing the tests after your third hypnotic session practice. However, doing the tests can be done sooner than the third session if you are certain that you have already reached a good depth. According to experts, one good test to determine the depth of trance is arm levitation. This is usually done by letting your arms relax lying on the armchair while you are under hypnosis. If you are right handed concentrate on your right hand or if you are left handed concentrate on that arm. You may feel heaviness in both your arms and legs. You then can suggest to yourself that all sensations of weight should drain away from that arm. An example of such suggestion is “my arm is getting lighter and lighter, lighter and lighter”. Furthermore, you can suggest to yourself that the weight you are feeling is draining away. Your arm is beginning to float into the air and towards your face and that your hand is getting lighter and lighter and floating higher and higher until your fingers touch your face. Additionally, you can suggest to yourself that your arm will bend at the elbow and floats higher up until this touches your face. If the suggestions are working, you may feel your arm quickly loosing all feelings of heaviness and may start to lift. The fingers may be the first to move, then the hand and finally the entire arm may begin to lift. You should continue repeating the suggestions using your own words and be sure not to make any voluntary movement of the arm but don’t hold it back when it rises. During hypnosis your subconscious mind is already taking control of your muscles and causes its movement. During the initial movement, you may notice your hand lifts in little jerks. Movement may become smoother as your hand moves higher and in a more rapid phase. Once your hand touches your face, you can then let this move lower into a much comfortable position.
Finally, if the arm levitation is successful, you will know that you have reached at least a light state of hypnosis. If you fail the test, you can always try during your succeeding hypnosis sessions. Experts advise that you should give your suggestions a little longer and repeat these over and over again to get a good and successful result.
