How to achieve Productivity, even when working from home
posted April 8, 2008 - 12:10pmMany people seek the comfort, convenience as well as the freedom of working from home, be it as a freelancer, a small business owner or some other home-based business.
There are many great reasons why you should choose to work from home. Working from home means that you can choose to work at your own pace, and follow your own timetable. There is no need to get dressed up in the mornings, no need to deal with potential workplace conflicts or navigate through peak hour traffic.
However, working from home does have its challenges and disadvantages. It may be difficult to concentrate at home due to the numerous distractions. To gain better control over such undesirable distractions, here are some tips as to how you can make the experience of working from home a productive one.
Step 1: Plan your Timetable
Plan a schedule indicating your working hours. Make sure that you will not be disturbed during this period. Inform anybody around of your plans so they will be less likely to disturb you.
Ironically, working from home creates a tendency for an individual to work longer hours than one might work when working in the workplace. Begin and end your work at a fixed time each day. This allows you to establish a nice work routine and will prevent you from getting burnt out as a result of overworking. This will also help to make sure that your work time does not cut into your personal and family time.
Step 2: Control your Distractions
Working from home, away from any prying eyes makes it easy for one to lose focus on the job at hand. Many distractions exist at home such as household chores, the home telephone or the distraction of family members that does not exist in the workplace. In addition, other distractions such as downloading music or surfing the Internet may eat into your work. It will be difficult, but you will have to shut yourself away from such distractions in order to become truly productive.
Step 3: Maintain a Desirable Working Environment
Productivity at work can be increased if your workplace is well organised. Reduce the clutter at your desk by removing any unnecessary ornaments and objects. Keep all important work-related documents neatly filed up and well classified.
Dedicate a specific drawer or compartment specifically for office supplies and keep it well stocked so you won’t have to waste valuable productive time searching for office supplies. In addition, dress professionally even when you are working from home. This will help you to achieve a good mental state which is conducive for working.
