There is More than One Route to a Career in Commercial Aviation. A commercial pilot in the U.S. is a person who is allowed to be paid for flying. Before you can be paid for flying any type of aircraft you must meet FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) minimum requirements).

Not being a pilot myself (I was a navigator in the Air Force and thus have considerable cockpit time as well as having spent considerable time with pilots), I believe that you do need some type of student license before you can receive a private pilot license (at least in the United States).
