How to Check Your Car Tires for Safety?

An average automobile tire loses pressure at the rate of 1 psi (pound per square inch) per month. Lower pressure causes the tires to overheat, which also reduces their dependability.

Cold weather causes tires to lose pressure as well at the rate of 1 psi for every 10 degrees F (12.2 degrees Celsius) drop in temperature.

Visual inspection is an unreliable way to check your car tires. Don’t depend on just your eyes.

Use a Pressure Gauge, but only when your tires are cold.

Do not rely on the pressure rating on your current tire either since you may be carrying the wrong tire.

The metal plate on the door jam of your car or your official user’s manual will tell you what the ideal tire pressure should be.

>>>>>> Rotate Your Tires

Also recommended: rotate your tires every 5,000 miles.

CAUTION:

Front and Rear Wheel Drive vehicles have DIFFERENT tire rotation patterns. Some tires are DIRECTIONAL as well: they should not be rotated from one side to another but only from front to back.

Check your user’s manual and or a professional mechanic to learn the correct way to rotate your tires.

>>>>>> Penny Test for tread wear:

Insert a Lincoln Penny into the tread of your tire. If you can see the TOP of President Lincoln’s head it is time to replace your tires.
