how to install a light
posted April 21, 2008 - 12:14amHave you ever needed a small job done in your home? Have you tried calling a repairman, handyman, electrictian, or a freind who knows it all? Here is a step by step article on how to safetly replace a light fixture. So whether it is a wall sconce or a fancy heir loom you can do it.
First for all you novice home improvement warriors dont forget to turn the power off.
Remove the fixture from the wall or ceiling. this may require you to remove the glass cover. This can be accomplished by either removing the single nut at the bottom of the glass cover, or removing the 3 knurled screws that clamp the glass from the sides.
You will see 2 screws that hold the base plate to the wall or ceiling. You may loosen them and twist the fixture.
You will now have a few wires exposed. Dont be intimadated you only have to worry about 2 of these wires.
If the house is fairly new ( under 100 years old) the colors of the wires will be black and white.
you will notice the white wire has many other wires attached to it. This is an indication that the power source is brought up through this light and feeds many other devices in the room such as outlets and maybe even another light.
The other wire is actually the wire that comes directly from the switch. This wire is the hot wire.
There is one more wire but this one is attached to the box itself this is the ground wire.
Remove the wiring and the plate that held the light on, The new light comes with one. Also never reuse wire nuts the light also comes with these as well.
Install the new holding bracket make sure the green screw is accessable.
Attach the ground wire from the light fixture to this screw.
Now attach the white wire to the wires that were all together 99 percent of the time they are white some times a red wire will be included to the bunch either way if you took note when you removed the old light you know where the white wire was. Sometimes you find a fixture has more than one socket for the bulbs. When this happens just attach all the black wires to each other and all the white wires to each other. Tighten the wire nuts and tape them with electrical tape.
Install the fixture, light bulbs, and cover Now turn power on and you are done
