How to Make Blueberry White Iced Tea
posted July 26, 2008 - 7:47amWhen it comes to health, white tea and blueberries just be the ultimate combination. White tea is a rich source of catechins and recent studies have shown this unprocessed tea has antibacterial and antiviral properties and may help to prevent certain types of cancer, particularly colon cancer. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins and are known to have one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any fruit available. Blueberries are also an excellent source of vitamins E and C. What if you could combine these two highly nutritious foods into a single delicious drink at home? The good news is you can do it quickly and economically. Here's how to make blueberry white tea:
Gather your Supplies
First, buy the white tea leaves you'll need to make your blueberry white tea. It's best to use loose white tea leaves since they are the least expensive and the highest in catechin levels. If possible, choose organic white tea to reduce the risk of exposure to pesticide residues. One of the best places to buy bulk, organic white tea leaves is at your local natural food market or a larger organic market such as Whole Foods. While you're there, pick up a container or fresh, organic blueberries.
Brew the White Tea
To prepare the white tea portion of your blueberry white tea, bring water to a temperature of around 180 degrees Farenheit. Once heated, remove the water from the burner and allow it to stand for around a minute. Now pour the hot water over your white tea leaves. The general formula is two teaspoons of white tea leaves for every eight ounces of water. Allow the white tea leaves to steep for about five minutes.
Prepare and Add the Blueberries
While your white tea leaves are steeping, mash the blueberries with a fork to prepare to add them to your white tea. Once you've finished steeping the white tea leaves for five minutes, strain the tea and save the leaves to reuse later. Add the mashed blueberries to the hot white tea and allow them to remain in the hot tea for a total of fifteen minutes. Use a strainer to remove the blueberries from the tea mixture and pour your fresh pot of blueberry white tea into a large glass container.
Serve blueberry white tea over ice for a refreshing summer drink. It's the perfect drink to sip on while enjoying a peaceful evening in your garden. Pour blueberry white tea into a tall glass and garnish with a sprig of mint for a tasty and beautiful presentation. Prepare to enjoy the taste as well as the considerable health benefits this tea has to offer.
