If you have an old door bell or your current door chime no longer works, following these simple instructions below to replace it. If you are upgrading from an old door bell to a door chime, I suggest you purchase a chime transformer also. Your old door bell transformer may not be suitable for the new door chime and may also damage it. If you are just changing for an old or broken door chime to a new one then you need not purchase a new transformer. Follow these simple steps below:
STEP 1: If changing from an old door bell to a door chime you will need to replace the transformer. Locate the old transformer in your house and carefully replace it by shutting off the circuit breaker first then remove the old transformer and install the new one. Refer to the wiring diagram included with the new transformer.
STEP 2: Remove the cover from the old door chime or bell and carefully remove the wires, one at a time, and cover each exposed wire with electrical tape. This is to ensure that they do not short out. These wires have low voltage and will not give you a shock.
STEP 3: Remove the screws securing the old door chime to the wall and carefully remove the old door chime.
STEP 4: Unpack the new door chime and carefully line it up on the wall so that the wires are in position. Now with a pencil outline where the new holes have to go on the wall.
STEP 5: Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the size of the screws that came with the new door chime. Drill the two holes on the wall you marked with your pencil.
STEP 6: Fasten your new door chime to the wall and reconnect the wires. Refer to the door chime wiring diagram for wiring details.
STEP 7: Attach cover to door chime and test it out. Refer to the instructions for adjusting the volume of the door chime.
