How to Restore Shape to Cloth Hats

"HATSTACK": While you would not want to leave your cloth hats "stacked" like this, I thought it was a way to show a little about the methodology for 'reshaping' your cloth hats.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a "hat person", I guess. Over the years, I've amassed a collection of cloth hats; you know, the kind with a brim all around, and a crisp, shaped top. Not the "floppy, fisherman's style", but the kind that has a true "shape" when you first buy it, and until the first time you wash it!
Well, As I said, I've amassed a bunch of these, and as they were washed, I'd end up sticking them into a closet and leaving them there...they'd usually "shrink" just enough to be 'too tight' to be comfortable (or so I thought).
One day I decided that all those hats in the closet weren't doing anyone any good there, so I asked my genius wife (she really is quite smart!!) if she knew of any way to get the original shape back. She suggested trying a spray starch, which she so kindly picked up for me while at the store.
So, I decided to try it out. But, I decided I could do just one better...here's how I did it:
1. I found a stack of plastic flower pots in our garage which 'just fit' inside the hats.
2. I pulled each hat over a flower pot...nice, tight fit.
3. Then I sprayed the top part of each hat with the spray starch, and left it for 5-10 minutes.
4. Then I used a hair dryer on high heat to "set" the starch.
I really was quite amazed at the results! All the hats now had their original shape back! Oh, there were a few minor wrinkles here and there, but they really look quite good, if I do say so myself! And, as an added bonus, the flower pots were just large enough to "stretch" the fabric out enough so the hats once again fit very comfortably!
Give it a try....it works very well indeed!
