How to use the AED
posted August 31, 2008 - 9:33amWhen the person suffers a heart attack, often what we will find is a ventricular fibrillation or a ventricular tachcardia on the ECG. The point is, CPR cannot treat such problem alone.
The most important thing that can be done in situation like these is to immediately apply defibrillation. < p>
Unfortunately however, defibrillators are not immediately avaialable considering that the ambulance may not be there on time.
This is the reason that in the United States, they have come up with a program called Public Access to Defibrillators (PAD). Yes, the public can now use these defibrillators provided that they have a background training on the use of such equipment. This are actually different from the manual defibrillators that we see in the hospital since these are completely automated. All it takes is a short course and orientation. Often this is incorporated in CPR training.
AED's have proven to be effective and is very useful in treating life threatening arythmias.
