How the trombone survived its near-death experience.

Over the course of the seventeenth century, the trombone disappeared from many places where it had once been common, but it did not become entirely extinct. The article traces its revival from Rome to London and Vienna and from Vienna to Paris. By the end of the eighteenth century, it was again found all over, and in a variety of new roles.
