How to Wire a Central Air Thermostat Your Self
posted October 27, 2009 - 3:44amFirst, i will assume that you are just replacing an old thermostat rather than installing a new one because a full install would require a grasp on electrical knowledge which would mean you wouldn't need my article. To install your new thermostat you will need to first cut the power to the area of the house you will be working from your panel box.

Step 2
Next, you will need to unscrew the old unit from the wall and carefully remove the wires from the back of the unit. When removing the wires place tape on each wire along with a label that lets you know what each wire is. After you label each wire you will want to tape that wire to the wall to prevent it from falling back into the wall and being lost forever.

Step 3
Now that everything is labeled and held in place you will want to start connecting each wire to the new thermostat one at a time and securing each connecting with either a wire nut or electrical tape. CAUTION: MAKE SURE NONE OF THE WIRES ARE EXPOSED WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED.

Step 4
The last step is always the best. Just screw the new thermostat to the wall and then the power back on. You should now have a fully functional new thermostat but test it to be sure. If for some reason it is not working remember to double check that you did return power to the unit. If it still does not work pull the unit off the wall and double check your wires. But this bit of advice was a just in case idea. You should have no problems.
