Introductory letters to pen pals are often the hardest letters to write. Since you don’t really know your pen pal that well yet, how do you know what will interest them? When writing the first letter, I usually ask myself “what sorts of things would I want my pen pal to tell me in their first letter?” and just supply them with that sort of information as it applies to me.
