How Your Brain's Functioning Is Affected By What And When You Eat.
posted October 25, 2009 - 4:36pmWhat you eat and drink can improve your memory and your ability to perform, as well as improving your mood by bringing balance to your emotions. The omega-3-fatty acids found in cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, will improve brain function, while antioxidants, found in dark green vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and spinach will prevent damage to the brain's delicate neurons.
The brain relies on neurotransmitters to pass messages from cell to cell. There are three primary neurotransmitters, the first of which is called ACETYCHOLINE and is responsible for memory. It is possible that individuals who suffer from Alzheimer's may be lacking this specific neurotransmitter. Acetycholine is found in foods such as cheese, egg yolks, meats, fish, milk, peanuts, wheat germ, broccoli, and, cauliflower.
The second neurotransmitter, called DOPAMINE, affects both attention, movement, and learning. This is the neurotransmitter related to Parkinson's disease. Dopamine can be found in both meat and fish protein, as well as beans, nuts, soy products and milk
The third neurotransmitter is SEROTONIN which affects mood, and sensations such as pleasure and joy. It is understandable that antidepressants increase the level of serotonin in recipients. The brain converts amino acids into serotonin. The absorption of amino acids is enhanced by carbohydrate foods such as cereals, breads, pasta.
It is obvious that failure to nourish our brains properly can have an adverse affect on all areas of our lives.
To feed our brains properly, they must also be fed at appropriate times with appropriate nutrients. A good breakfast is a necessity and should include a good source of protein plus some complex carbohydrates for sustained energy.
Lunch should again contain some complex carbohydrates but a lesser amount as well as another dose of protein to keep up the energy. The afternoon will not be a productive one if the lunch is heavy on carboydrates only.
Dinner can be high with carbohydrates, a small portion of protein and needed fruits and vegetables. Make your protein low fat. Snacks should be fruits or vegetables. Sugars should be limited, and don't forget lots of water, and some good brisk exercise.
Properly feeding our minds and our bodies will enable us to perform better, prevent disease, and live long and happy lives.
