Human Papilloma Virus Run Amok - 'Tree Man' Returns Home After Surgery and Begins Required Treatment For Recovery
posted August 27, 2008 - 1:28am Dede, the Indonesian man dubbed the "Tree Man" because of large leafy growths and hard wood-like warts that grew from his extremities and over his body, returned home after a series of surgeries to remove 6 kilograms of the growths from his body. The operations were performed over nine
months in Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java. Indonesia denied requests to bring Dede to the United States for treatment.
The 37-year old man suffered from the human papilloma virus which had run amuck because of a genetic disorder that limited his immune system's strength to fight off the spread of the growths.
With the help of U.S. dermatologist, Anthony Gaspari, from the University of Maryland the condition was diagnosed and an effective treatment was developed.
Dede still has to return to the hospital for one final operation to remove a few more growths and must maintain a course of a medicinal cocktail which includes high doses of Vitamin A to help boost his immune system and halt the spread of the growths.
Here is a video of Dede which was taken about 4-5 years ago.
