Humanity's Four Legged Redemption
Humanity's Four Legged Redemption
What is virtually better than a Tamagatchi? Softer than a chia pet? Smarter than Webkinz? Able to leap short fences and take an ice-cream cone from a toddler faster than you can pay for it?
You guessed it...a four legged, waggely, hind-licking, companion animal, known as "canis lupus familiaris" - dog.
Although exact dates are not known, it is estimated that humans and dogs have been reliant upon each other for approximately 15 000 years or so. According to some studies, (Dr. Paul Tacon, Principal Science Research at the Australian Museum), there may be evidence that dogs and humans have co-evolved, and some of our evolutional traits and behaviours, including (but, no doubt, not limited to), hunting, territorial and social, we may owe to our canine buddies.
This may give rise to new conspiracy theories about dogs wanting to rule our government and then the world…was it humans who selectively bred them, or was it the other way around? Same goes for training, I know some people who definitely display behaviours that indicate they may have been “brainwashed” or “conditioned” to automatically react to their dogs demands - immediately when the dog barks his or her command…
All C.T.’s aside, dogs have proven themselves literally invaluable to our species, not only historically, but in modern times as well. There are (according to Wikipedia anyway) an estimated 400million dogs in the world. Many of them are companion animals, but there are a great number of working dogs who in many cases, are heavily depended on by humans. We employ canines in several fields (not just the ones with livestock) of service, medical/therapeutic, rescue, military/police/security/detection, farming, entertainment, transportation and hunting are some of the areas humans use dog expertise.
When you think about it, dogs are a little bit like humans - they come from many different backgrounds, come in all shapes and sizes, as well as individual attitudes and personalities. They are so much more innocent than we are - a dogs “ulterior motives” are simple…food/treats. water, exercise and love (not necessarily in that order). In short, they ask for very little (most of the time) and give a whole lot.
Dog owners, aka human companions, live longer, healthier, happier lives (sounds like a dog food commercial). Our canine counterparts have been known to improve our lives both physically and psychologically. Dog people are generally easy to pick out too, aside from the smile, fur on the clothing is a clue and if you happen to get a gander at a dog owners vehicle, you might just notice the slobber streaks and nose prints on the windows (dead giveaway).
Ah yes, dogs… unconditional love, a willingness to please, all kinds of happy energy to spare, and so many things to teach us “two leggers” with so little time to do it in. We should appreciate our “four-legged” babies for all that they are, a major contributor to human society as we know it today. It’s just too bad we can’t vote for them.

400 million dogs!
Wow! I love dogs but I only have a cat right now. They are such a loving animal. I have a fear of big, scary dogs like ptbulls and mastiffs though! I get really upset when I hear that people have left their dog in their vehicle as they "run" in to the store and the dog dies of overheating. After all that dogs do and give to us, they deserve more than that for sure. Great post binkdonk, I loved the title, too! +1
Peace,

Thanks Mia, I find my dog helps me to revitalize and she makes me want to play. She is also useful to have around when I talk to myself - at least it looks like I'm talking to the dog...makes it seem as if I am completely sane.
I wish I had the time, energy and money to help all the pets that are subjected to cruelty, sigh, just have to do it when and where I can, one animal at a time.
