Humor and Testosterone
Humor and Testosterone
Men are naturally more humorous than women due to the role played by Testosterone. Men make more gags than women and their jokes tend to be more aggressive. Women tended to make encouraging, praising comments, while men jeered.
Previous findings have suggested women and men differ in how they use and appreciate humour. Women tend to tell fewer jokes than men and male comedians outnumber female ones. Research suggests men are more likely to use humour aggressively by making others the butt of the joke.
And aggression - generally considered to be a more masculine trait - has been linked by some to testosterone exposure in the womb. Humour develops from aggression caused by male hormones.
One of the researchers tried to ascertain the differentce in behavior of men and women and used an unicycle to ride around the city. He got more taunts and jeers from mainly males than females and majority of the males were the younger and aggressive types rather than the older males or females.
