Home Made Hydroponics System

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using a nutrient and mineral solution in the place of soil. The plant is supported by a soil less medium such as rock wool and the roots either get flooded periodically or sit in an aerated nutrient solution. This creates a high nutrient, high oxygen growing environment that can result in faster growing and higher yielding plants.

There are numerous hydroponics set ups from simply watering the medium with nutrient solution to a controlled flood and drain system. Hydroponics units can easily be home made and customised to suit your gardens needs.

To build a simple hydroponics system you will need:

- A Nutrient tank with lid . This can be any water tight container depending on your needs. To prevent alga growth the tank should not let light through.
-Aquarium air pump, air stone and tubing
-Net pot
-Hydroponics medium
-Aquarium silicon sealant

Cut a hole in the lid of the container big enough for your net pot to fit into with out falling through.

Using silicon sealant attach the air stone to the bottom of the tank .connect the tubing leading from the air stone out side the tank to the air pump.

Fill with nutrient solution , replace lid and fill net pot with hydroponics medium . Top up with nutrient solution as required

This design can be altered to fit as many plants as you like. For bigger grows use bigger containers. Paddling pools can even been used as a nutrient tank with the net pots suspended in polystyrene sheets floated on top of the nutrient solution.

Start plants for hydroponic gardens in rock wool starter cubes or similar medium. Water with a week (about half strength)nutrient solution or specific seedling nutrient solution. The medium should never be allowed to dry out and kept at the correct temperature for your specific species of plant to germinate/root. The plant is ready to move to your hydroponic system when the roots make their way out side the rock wool cubes. The plants will still need to be watered until its roots are long enough to reach the nutrient solution.

Only use nutrients designed for hydroponic growing and follow manufacturers instructions .Their are many different brands available suited to specific types of plants.
