In the Game Of Politics, I Call the Spread, and It's ZERO!
posted November 3, 2009 - 4:07pmI really hate to do this, but I'm in a foul mood today so here goes. I am sick to death of the politicians, the media and the defeatist mentality of far too many people. In general we are educated, healthy, empowered and free, but to listen to these people, one would think we are powerless in deciding our fate. So I thought I would jot down a few things I ponder while listening to the whiners, the media and the politicians.
Stop giving President Obama a point spread. I can't remember any other president taking a pass because of what he "inherited". It is the job of the president to LEAD the country not to use past policy as a scapegoat. Using the very problems the president assured us during his campaign that he could solve as an excuse for an agenda in trouble only makes him look weak and petty.
Equal time here. The prior administration and the entire congress is guilty of gross neglect for sitting on their asses while our economy collapsed, and the buck stopped with President Bush. No excuses here. The facts speak for themselves, but (and this is a big but) no president or member of congress signed those mortgage papers or made that investment. We ALL rode the wave of a fictitious prosperity. Stop blaming others for our own stupidity.
People who don't agree with the health care proposals do NOT necessarily oppose health care. I'm sick of hearing that because I disagree with the current offering I am out to screw the poor people. I'm all for affordable health care for those that work, those that are refused because of pre-existing conditions, those that cannot work, and every single child in this country. Sorry, but I don't want to cover illegals. I want to send them back where they came from. Yeah, I know, who'd do the manual labor? How about the unemployed? Menial jobs were good enough for my parents and for me when I started out. Oh, and by the way, they are still good enough for the working age kids in this house.
Apology, crapology. Stop demanding smarmy apologies for "shocking" words and actions. Time would be better spent focusing on issues. We all know these apologies are never sincere and are generally ineffective in un-ringing the bell. How about this? How about these well-educated, dignified representatives stop acting like three-year-olds and start giving others the respect they themselves demand? Stop using our seat of government as a playground. It's an embarrassment to our country.
If members of congress are soooo shocked and dismayed about earmarks and stimulus money being handed out for bonus payments why don't they stop it rather than pointing fingers and whining about it? I's a simple question and don't tell me about "conditions" prior to release of the money. If there is a law against it, change the law, dummy. I hear a lot about how we need to stop the spending, blah blah, blah. Here's an idea. DO IT!
Shut up about fraud in government. Obviously no one is serious about stopping it. It's not like it just popped up. I'd be willing to bet that the phrase has been used in every campaign for decades and it hasn't been seriously addressed yet. Gee, I wonder why. This is why I think it's a good idea to require every elected official to opt out of a re-election bid if he cannot show some progress in all campaign promises. Who would be the judge? Um, how about the voters? If you can't at least attempt to keep your promise to me then get out of Dodge.
Any and every member of the media showing consistent bias (other than op-ed) is spitting on the very concept of reporting the news. People that faithfully listen to and swear by any one organization in the news these days are themselves biased, whether they realize it or not. It is OUR responsibility to educate ourselves, and we do that by remaining open and receptive to all points of view, and forming an opinion. The media is one way to do this, but far from the only way. Stop taking everything you hear on the morning news as gospel. Take the duct tape of your channel and get a second, third, and fourth opinion.
Stop running around wringing your hands in desperation wondering "What to do? What to do?" There is one thing to do that hasn't been done en masse for a long time. It's called voting out the unproductive slackers, every single one of them. No more riding on the coattails of one accomplishment. One elected official does not a policy make. One party does not either. It is a mass of comfortable, bloated, corrupt, condescending, out of touch political fat cats that control policy. Take the time to know not only who you are voting for but what they stand for. The parties be damned.
And to the insulated, isolated rapists in Washington, you will have to start proving yourself to me immediately or I'm benching you. Sure, laugh and ask what I think might happen if all you power brokers were voted out. "The country would collapse!" Take a look around, sir or madam. Considering your track record, I'm willing to chance it. Remember, it's my call in the voting booth, I call the spread, and it's ZERO.
